Sustainable architecture in Colombia: a way of living in balance with nature and with ourselves

Sustainable construction is an opportunity to innovate and create solutions that respect the planet and human needs. According to data from the Colombian Sustainable Construction Council (CCCS), construction is responsible for 16% of global water consumption and 40% of greenhouse gas emissions.

Some benefits for the natural environment and for people who live or work in sustainable real estate projects are:

Energy efficiency: they reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, which helps mitigate climate change and save economic resources, thanks to materials and techniques that allow maintaining an optimal temperature inside without the need for heating or air conditioning systems.

Use of natural resources: they use materials that come from renewable sources, thus reducing the extraction of non-renewable natural resources and decreasing the environmental impact of construction.

Promoting biodiversity: Sustainable real estate projects seek to integrate projects into the natural environment, promoting biodiversity and protecting ecosystems. Sustainable real estate projects use materials and techniques that do not harm the flora and fauna of the area and create green spaces, such as gardens and urban orchards.

Colombia has a regulatory framework that supports sustainable construction, such as Decree 1285/15 on 'sustainable construction guidelines', Resolution 549/15 of the Ministry of Housing, City and Territory (MVCT), which adopts the 'Guide for saving water and energy in buildings', and Conpes 'National policy on sustainable buildings'. In addition, there are economic incentives for construction companies that undertake sustainable projects, such as "green" credit lines with special conditions and tax breaks.

Colombia also has certifications that recognize the sustainable quality of real estate projects, such as HQE (High Environmental Quality) and EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies). These certifications are granted by international organizations that evaluate compliance with sustainability criteria in the design, construction and management of buildings. Our projects are committed to sustainability, learn more here.
